The School

What makes us different to many other martial art gyms is that while we train hard to learn the techniques and principles of our arts, it is equally important to be able to take the lessons learned in the gym so you can perform your best in life. We try our best to provide our students with the lifestyle approach that comes with constant study of the martial arts.

The original school called Ohana Self-Defense Club began as a “backyard school” in 1998 in Orange County, California. Ohana Self-Defense originally focused primarily on self-defense techniques from the Pacific Rim martial arts traditions (Kempo, Jujutsu, Karate etc), but later expanded to include other expressions of martial arts. The name not only represents the martial traditions included in our curriculum but also represent an important aspect of our school, one of a “martial family”.

Steven's first publicly open school, the Primal Academy, was located in Upland, CA. It opened its doors in 2011 and focused specifically on teaching the Non-Classical Chinese Boxing, Kempo Karate and Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do as taught by his teachers.

In 2013 we chose to move our school to Diamond Bar, CA and teach on a non-commercial basis as the Chinese Boxing Institute | Ohana Self-Defense Club. Steven continues to teach Non-Classical Chinese Boxing and Jeet Kune Do two to three times per week to interested students.
